Saving Angel…

Not strictly comic book related, but it’s close enough…especially since I’m a fan of the show. For those of you that don’t know, The WB has decided to cancel ANGEL after this, it’s fifth season. Nothing new, right? Shows get cancelled all the time. The big difference here is that this is easily the best season ANGEL’s seen in terms of story, and The WB has never had anything negative to say about the show’s prettty solid ratings (it’s one of the network’s top-3 rated series), so this decision has raised more ire than it might have if the show were on a downward spiral. Ergo, it’s no suprise that ANGEL fans have organized a campaign to save the show.
What’s different with this campaign is that they actually seem to know what they’re doing, and have managed to amass a genuine warchest. To date, over $17K has been raised, ads are going to be appearing in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, and a mobile billboard campaign will be starting shortly. Additionally, there are custom-designed postcard for you to print out and mail to specified addresses, flyers to be distributed if you want to, and even a postcard designed to work with the USPS’s online mailing deal.
It’s all really quite impressive.
And don’t write these guys off as HEAT-esque lunatics just yet. SImilar campaigns have proven successful in the past, even before the internet was available to rally the masses. Cagney & Lacey was cancelled and renewed after fans wrote the network en-masse, and other shows such as Star Trek and Roswell have seen similar results.
If you’re interested in checking out the hubbub for yourself, and might even want to send a card in, take a look at http://www.savingangel.org. If nothing else, you have to be impressed with the efforts and achievements they’ve made so far.

Ya know, I’ve never seen a whole episode of either Buffy or Angel so I have point of reference. But, with the other “quality” programming that the WB has, you would think that Angel would be a great anchor to an evening’s lineup. However, I am using reason which is why I’m not a Network suit.
BTW, I’ll turn in my Fanboy card now.

I really disliked the episodes I saw during the first 2 years ANGEL was on the air, but last season won me over. This season’s definitely one of the television highlights of the week for both me and the wife. If you get the opportunity to rent the DVDs someday, go for it.

Sure Steve, when I tell you it’s a good show you laugh at me. But now, OH how the tables have turned.
Wait, I still think it’s a good show, but season 3 was better than last season. As for renting the DVDs, it’s a must. The show plays better when watched in a lump.

really? I don’t believe I’ve ever watched a whole episode of Angel either. Buffy yes, Angel I have no idea. Last I saw the character was before he split and became an offshoot show of Buffy. So what’s his story anyways? Anyone can fill me up?
