Hamsterdance Redux

I thought this was interesting simply because I had chalked the HamsterDance phenomenon to be a typical flash-in-the-pan thI was wrong.

KOCH Records will release a ‘best of album,’ if you will, of Hampton the Hampster’s Hampsterdance Hits on April 27. For those of you who may not be familiar with the story and the musical prowess of Hampton … It all began the summer of 1998 when a group of designer challenged one another to design a website and see who can get the most web hits. One of the friends, Deidre LaCarte, created the Hampton website featuring the addictive Hampsterdance song and dance. Hampton, the site, dance and the Hampsterdance song continue to be popular. In fact the song is currently holding at #5 on Radio Disney playlist; so it is no surprise that it will be included on the Disney Ultimate Jams CD, a collection of the most-played songs on Radio Disney, available from April 6th. Finally, The Hampsterdance Song will also be featured in the upcoming feature film, Are We There Yet, starring Ice Cube, Nia Long, Philip Bolden and Aleisha Allen. I don’t know how Deirdre’s friends fared with their websites, but it is probably safe to say she was the winner of the initial challenge; to date having had more than 100m registered visitors (from 200 countries) to the site. A second site www.hampsterdance2.com is now the home to the characters, stories and of course the music and dance.
