Yeah, it’s back - Bendis and Oeming’s POWERS debuts from Marvel’s new Icon imprint this week, and it doesn’t dissapoint. After the final? of the Image run, I half expected B&O to play it somewhat subtly and slowly ramp things back up to the typically frenetic level the series has had in the past. But, no - within the first half a dozen pages we’re treated to the first “Holy Shit!” moment of the new series, and things keep moving nicely from there. There’s the expected filling in of the gaps you normally see in books when they pull a time-shift between incarnations, but B&O don’t draw things out. By the end of this issue, the reader is pretty much completely caught up with the main players or sufficiently introduced to them if they happen to be a Marvel fanboy that’s just discovering the title. In addition to that, longtime readers are treated to their very first mystery which begins to unfold in the last few pages, creating a nice bit of symmetry with the original series’ debut issue.

Summation - POWERS is still one of the best monthly reads you can spend your hard earned $2.95 on. Bendis and Oeming are both in top form, and it’s great to have them back together. Recommended without reservation.
