Tenth Muse Promo Fizzles…

Or perhaps I mean sizzles? I honestly don’t know. However, after sending out a press release that seemed to have absolutely no information in it whatsoever, it’s since been discovered that in their little bit of bullshit teaser hype they do actually name the “celebrity” that’s going to be lending her image and body to the fictional character.
Blue Water has recently begun a misinformation campaign, to keep readers guessing to the REAL identity of their newest celebrity model. Some of the names being heard mumbled throughout various news sites include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cindy Margolis, Heidi Klum, Britney Spears, and WWE Diva, Trish Stratus … among others.
Well, it didn’t take a lot of googling for one of the Newsarama posters to discover who the new “talent” involved is.
Cindy Margolis put on her profile for SI’s Experts Fantasy Football game “….she will also be the model for the new 10th Muse Comic collection that is coming out in January 2005.” The rest of her profile is a cut and paste from her website.
Now, aside from wondering why the publishers would make such a big deal out of a mystery that was so easy to figure out, what I want to know is who the hell buys a comic because Rena Mero, Cindy Margolis or any other faux-celebrity is on the cover.

“who the hell buys a comic because Rena Mero, Cindy Margolis or any other faux-celebrity is on the cover.”
Why, the people who buy three copies, of course!

The reason for doing a celebrity endorsed comic is because, being an independant publisher - you need something to draw people to pick up the book. The 10th Muse is a solid book but there are 100’s out there that are solid. With Rena Mero - we hit #6 on Diamond Charts - so people do pick it up. It also brings new people into comic stores with the national press - to help this dying medium. Marvel sold 8 million copies of X-men with Jim Lee in the 90’s - now you are lucky to get 250,000. And think how hard it is to be an independant. As for the lame press - we had to leak something - since we knew about the SI thing. We have a formal contract not to annouce till the 17th of this month. Once again we are doing the national press with her to bring new people into stores…I would buy the Rita Moreno comic.
