PVP #14

PVP (Player Vs. Player) is one of the funniest comic books out there today. Told from Scott Kurtz? irreverent point of view, nothing is taboo, including comic book conventions. Though PVP usually deals with the day to day activities that occur at a gaming magazine, issue #14 finds the crew at a convention promoting their product. The events that play out and the manner with which competition is dealt with are gut-splitting to say the least.

Non-readers of this title may be most familiar with Skull, the troll who lives in the supply closet, and who is always good for a big giggle. What they don?t know is that some of the funniest moments occur with Brent Sienna, the cynical character, and Jade Fontaine, who as his girlfriend is the ultimate geeky hot chick. Gaming nerd and genius Francis and Boss Cole round out the regular cast, and their interactions with Brent are painfully realistic.

Robert Kirkman fans will get a kick out of this issue, as an anti-tribute of mammoth proportions ensues. Of course, to be lampooned by Kurtz is more of an honor then a curse, so I am sure Kirkman may have enjoyed the moment more then anything, but his and Ryan Ottley?s portrayals are a hoot. Another key moment is when the guys at PVP attempt to make Jade dress in a skimpy outfit to hand out flyers in order to compete with their rival magazine.

Kurtz? simple art style fits perfectly for his book. From his first days online to today, he has held true to his own visions, and I applaud him for it. He hits a nerve with biting, truthful wit. I have come to eagerly await his comic book, and find myself at his website, looking for new stuff from time to time. See http://www.pvponline.com/ for what I mean.

If you haven?t read PVP, give it a try, or at least swing by the website to see what I mean. Scott Kurtz had created a world that is eerily similar to ours, but funny.
