New Warhol/Hans Christian Andersen Exhibit

One of the best art shows I’ve ever had the privledge of seeing was the Warhol traveling exhibition that passed through Los Angeles about 3 years ago. Prior to that show, my main exposure to Warhol’s work had mainly been through textbooks, with a few chances to see the random piece on exhibit here and there. Despite rarely being able to study his work in person, he’s been one of my favorite artists for about as long as I can remember.
Hans on the other hand, has been a part of my life for decades. As a child, I read and re-read my mother’s old fairy tale books until they were falling apart, and Andersen’s work in particular stands out in my mind to this day. I really hope that this show, opening in Shanghai, China next week, manages to travel across the Pacific to the United States.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987), the biggest name in the pop art movement, showed a surprisingly serious and pious attitude towards Hans Christian Andersen, “the father of the fairytale,” in a series of silk-screen prints the artist created in 1986.
“Andy Warhol and Andersen,” an exhibition organized by Creek Art which opens on Monday, has 57 of Warhol’s silk-screen prints of Andersen and his works. This year also marks the bicentenary of Andersen’s birth.
“This is the world premiere of Warhol’s silk-screen Andersen prints,” says Ji Pei, spokesman for the Creek Art.
