Here’s some more fuel for what’s sure to be one of the Great Nerd Debates of ‘05/’06: the New York Times on DC’s highly anticipated, over-discussed, and very fascinating company-wide recalibration –

For the record/my 2 bits (not because you care — but because I can!): People who rail against “Identity Crisis” missed the point. It’s a breezy airplane/beach potboiler with superheroes by a guy who makes his living writing very competent and readable mass market popular fiction. Big wow.

I would be one of the nerds who railed against IC; only because the eventual killer turned out to be a “desperate housewife”. Really, I don’t mind the occasional beach read-type of books but only when I know that premise going in to the book. I just thought that Metzler, while writing a good story, came up short.

I agree man, the ending was a flop. But some people were just so up in arms about the whole thing — like their lifeblood was being sucked out. I mean, to me it was just simply a murder mystery for adults with superheroes, not a grave insult to an entire generation of comic book readers.

I agree man, the ending was a flop. I just thought the whole thing should’ve been criticized more for having an unsatisfying conclusion than being an affront to an entire generation of comic book readers or whatever. It was a murder mystery for adults (albeit with a bad ending). That’s what Meltzer does, that’s what he was hired to do.

There may have been 5 nerds who got really up in arms about the whole thing (which is usually the case when anything blasphemous, such as a murder or a costume change happens) and made the series seem controversial, but I think what IC did was expose the problem with superhero comics in general: nothing of any significance ever happens, and I think it’s mostly due to fear of pissing off said 5 nerds. I praise DC for trying to change that with IC (even though I didn’t like the story, but that’s neither here nor there) and INFINITE CRISIS.
