Alleluia! She-Hulk is back! I have eagerly awaited this day, and I am very pleased with what I have just read. The sense of humor and the depth of character are right where I wanted to find them: Front and center. Jennifer Walters is an important piece of the puzzle, but her She-Hulk persona is as carefree as ever. It is the best of both worlds as presented by Dan Slott and Juan Bobillo, who are back for a second round.
This first issue finds Jennifer going back to work at the recently rebuilt Timely Plaza. After her major throw down with Titania and her power glitches, it is time for another chance at practicing law. Much to Jen’s chagrin, things she thought were firm have changed, and there are some new characters running around. The good news is that Awesome Andy is squarely in place, and that there is still a lot of the familiar left.
Slott is the type of writer who gets it. Some of the humor he adds to the book is like secret asides to faithful readers, and it reminds me of the greatness of Stan Lee. Slott doesn’t over think the situation. He runs with the lighter side of things, but also knows when to have a serious moment. Slott finds the balance of She-Hulk and that is what makes this book so exceptional.
I can’t forget to mention the superb work done by Bobillo and inker Marcelo Sosa. The cartoony effect emphasizes the sheer scope of She-Hulk while ably capturing the petiteness of Jennifer Walters. Bobillo’s panel work makes the story seem epic, like it’s got more meat to it. It is thrilling to see how in synch the creative team is.
My vote for eye-catching cover of the week goes to artist Greg Horn. The cover to this issue is brilliant and sexy. She-Hulk poses as Justice, but with her own witty twist. I would like to win the lottery so I could turn it into a major piece of art in my home. The cover alone makes the issue worth the $2.99 price of admission.
If you missed She-Hulk the first time around, now is your chance to jump on board before this issue sells out. Slott and Bobillo are a wonderful creative team, and they make the experience a winner for all involved. She-Hulk is a full-blown enigma, and she is captured here in perfection.
