Quick Takes for October 30

Happy Halloween one day early! This week there were some definite treats in the comic books that came out, but there was also the obligatory dirty trick. Now is as good a time as any to break it down. In honor of Halloween, books are either a Trick or a treat. Here is the run down.

Teen Titans #28: SCARY TRICK. Part two of the Rob Liefeld and Gail Simone horror fest hit stores this week. Unfortunately, there was no redemption in sight in the second part of a story that hadn’t fared well the first time out of the gate. Thankfully Geoff Johns and new artist Tony Daniel are back for the next issue, clearing the way for treats in our future.

Noble Causes #14: TREAT. Now that Zephyr Noble has given birth and moved on with her life, writer Jay Faerber is shaking things up for the cast in general. Most of it resonates pretty well with me, as things were getting stagnant. If you haven’t tried Noble Causes before, now is a good time to jump on board.

Strangers In Paradise #77: TREAT. Katchoo has made some life decisions and is more at peace then ever, but for how long is anyone’s guess. Francine and David are in flux, with life changes coming down the pipeline. The best news of this issue is that Casey is back in rare form, livening up the book for issues to come. TRICK: the series is ending sometime around issues 89 or 90.

Fathom: Cannon #2: TRICK & TREAT.
The art is wonderful, and the story is pretty decent, but there isn’t a lot of heart to this Fathom mini-series. The treat is seeing some rare origin material, but the trick is that there is a long standing plot thread that needs resolution.

JLA #121: TRICK. After the great build up done in the Crisis of Conscience storyline, this new “World without a Justice League arc leaves me limp. The art is not Thomas Derenick’s best, and I still think Bob Harras is a better editor then writer.

Captain America #11: TREAT. The big payoff as we finally learn the origins of the Winter Soldier. Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting have rejuvenated Captain America in a big way. Not since Mark Waid’s pre “Heroes Resold run has there been such excitement about Marvel’s premiere Avenger.

Wonder Woman #222: TREAT. Things are building towards a big crescendo with the events in this issue. Cheetah is on the loose in The Hague as Wonder Woman tries to make amends that may never come. The Amazons don’t look like they are going to take any prisoners as tensions build to a head. Pick up this title or you are missing some of the best drama around.

Happy Halloween all! I hope you get more treats then tricks and have a wonderful November!
