DVD Review: Home Movies Season Three

Having never watched an episode of Home Movies, the Season Three DVD set was my first exposure to the story of Brendon Small and his friends, Melissa and Jason. While I did have some reservations when the DVD started, overall, Season Three was pretty damn funny.
There’s a cohesive train of thought to each episode, which made following the show very easy for a newbie. The voices were well acted and the animation, while a bit on the crude side, fits the narrative of the show to a T. However, the show may not be for all viewers as the rhythm is not like a traditional animated show,. The series doesn’t aim for a broad style of comedy, another device used in traditional comedic animation programs. But if you can accept those facts as well as embrace this artistic style, then Home Movies Season Three needs to be in your DVD collection.
Choice episodes: Shore Leave, Improving Your Life Through Improv, Renaissance, and Guitarmageddon.
Extras: First off, this is not the most barren DVD Set that I’ve seen on the market. However, this one has just enough of them to leave a pang for more in future installment. The Decide your Own Doom Interactive Game reminded me of the old Choose Your Adventure books that everyone was talking about in the early 80s and the Featurette For People Who Don’t Necessarily Like Home Movies was pretty good.
Also included in this three-disc set is the standard episode commentary for most of the episodes, an Episode Animatics for one episode per disc, and a radio interview. So as I stated previously, the set wasn’t devoid of quality stuff but still I wished that there was some more content, like a couple of commentary track with the voice cast or a featurette about the making of a Home Movies script and voice rehearsal. Hey, call me greedy if you want, but nowadays this stuff is becoming commonplace on most TV Seasons-on-DVD box sets.
