KFR’s Best of 2005

Over the coming weeks, each writer here at KFR will be posting his/her “Best of 2005″ lists, including our top 5 picks of various forms of entertainment. “Best of” lists often intrigue and enrage me at the same time, and I’ll be damned if for once I won’t be the one doing the intriguing and enraging.
Top 5 Movies
1. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
While some claim that Revenge of the Sith’s glowing reviews were a result of the film simply being not as bad as the first two Star Wars prequels, the truth is that Sith, through and through, is a great entertainment. From the swash buckling 20-minute opening to the stunning Anakin-Obi-Wan lightsaber duel, the film rarely misses a beat. Time will prove it stands with The Empire Strikes Back as the best in the series.
2. King Kong
3. Sin City
4. The Squid and the Whale
5. The Devil’s Rejects
Top 5 Albums
1. Paul McCartney: Chaos and Creation in the Backyard
2. Silver Sun: Disappear Here
Blink and you might miss it: Silver Sun’s third album (and first in 6 years) is over in just over a half hour, but included in Disappear Here’s 10 songs is some of the sharpest, smartest power pop ever put to record. The songs come and go quickly - just long enough to get you humming along - but never overstay their welcome. “Found You In A Dream” sounds like ’80s ELO on steroids, and opening track “Bubblegum” even has a “Na-na-na” singalong section. The saddest thing, aside from the fact that these English rockers aren’t famous? Their albums aren’t even available in the U.S.
3. The Pernice Brothers: Discover a Lovelier You
4. John Davis: John Davis
5. Brendan Benson: The Alternative to Love
Top 5 Things That Actually Lived Up to the Hype:
1. Infinite Crisis
2. All-Star Superman
3. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
4. The NHL’s rule changes
The game is faster than it’s been in ages, overtime shootouts add an extra dimension of drama and tension (the Rangers/Capitals shootout lasted 15 rounds!), and scoring is up. It’s great to have hockey back, but for it to be better than before is just “icing” (zing!) on the cake.
5. The Colbert Report
Top 5 Things That Didn’t
1. Office Space Special Edition DVD
2. House of M
3. PSP
Basically a portable PS2 that plays movies and music as well as videogames, the PSP could’ve been the next iPod. Instead, the less powerful and less expensive Nintendo DS stole its thunder by releasing several astonishing games this year - Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS, Meteos - something the PSP failed to do. The PSP/Nintendo DS battle shows that graphics aren’t everything; a videogame system is only as good as its games, nothing else.
4. Lennon: The Musical
5. Fantastic Four The Movie
