DC’s 52: $2.50 = “Low” Cover Price?

DC Comics recently announced some details about their new maxi-series following Infinite Crisis, dubbed 52. It will be a weekly series, running in real time (a la Fox’s 24) for one year, filling in the gaps of what happened between the end of Infinite Crisis and every DC Universe title, as they’re all starting “One Year Later” once Infinite Crisis is over.
What piqued my interest from the press release though, was this:
“And if 52 wasn’t exciting enough already, each issue will be priced at the special, low price of $2.50 U.S.”
Since when is $2.50 a “special, low price”? At some point, people are going to realize that as fun as this stuff is, ultimately it’s just guys in tights hitting each other, and it’s not worth the money. For the record, to read every issue of 52, it’s going to cost you the “special, low price” of $130.00.

Dude, that’s crap!! For a weekly series, I really expected them to drop the pricetag to $1.99. That 50 cents makes a difference.

On some level, I have to appreciate this Marvel-ous price gouge. You have to hand it to DC: they know where their bread is buttered. People are going to bitch and moan, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what it costs. Suckas they come a dime a dozen, and when I say dozen you know what I’m talking about boyeeeee.

Fuck DC, man. They’ve totally lost me with Infinite Crisis. I’ve been with them through thick and thin.
I was there when Jon Bogdanove drew creepy superman, when Batman was retarded (see: Kelly Jones), letting Devin Grayson pretend to be a writer, the second half of Wolfman’s Titans run, Dan Jurgens, Guy Gardner: Warrior, etc…
Now, I just don’t give a fuck about what they are doing. And I’m not shelling out 2.50, 52 times this year for a story this crappy.
Suck it DC. I’ll be back in a few years when things don’t suck.

It might be a low price. For starters, I think it’s the lowest price DC offers on its non-kiddie line books, isn’t it? There’s no title left at $2.25 anymore, is there?
Second, what’s the format for the series? 32 pages? Ads/no ads? Both of those things could make a considerable difference.

That’s the thing, Augie - offering the book at the same price as the rest of the lowest priced books in your line isn’t very special. Well, unless they mean special in comparison to other limited series titles which all seem to cost a minimum of $2.95 a pop, if you consider a guaranteed 52 issue run limited, that is…

That’s true, though I’m sure there’ll be ads. Still, it’s more a commentary on how expensive comics are getting overall. On the comics landscape right now, $2.50 ain’t that horrible, but it’s amazing how sharply cover prices have risen in a short amount of time. In 5 years I’m sure the average cover price will be somewhere from $3-$4. How will kids afford this stuff?

Doesn’t matter. Kids don’t read superhero comics.

EXACTLY! And why? Because they’re overpriced!

Testify! Overpriced and written for 25-40-year-old men!

Yes! But at their best, comics can be enjoyed by all ages. Look at All-Star Superman. What better comic to give to your little brother and/or dad?
