Pixar Bringing ‘The Spirit’ To Life?

Oh god oh god oh god, please let this be true. Time Magazine is reporting that, along with other Pixar projects in production, Brad Bird may be helming a Spirit flick. I so freaking hope this happens. It’s a shame that if it does make it to screen, Will Eisner won’t have the chance to see the final piece or be involved with character designs. You know that while most of the characters are picture perfect as they stand, some (Ebony White) would have to be completely updated while maintaining Eisner’s style. Eric “The Goon” Powell would be perfect for that job .
Pixar may follow its summer vehicle Cars with Ratatouille, a tale about a rat who lives in a fancy French restaurant. Little is known of future projects, but Incredibles auteur Brad Bird has long wanted to direct a noir-style film, possibly based on Will Eisner’s comic The Spirit. Meanwhile, creative kingpin John Lasseter, who has a deep affinity for traditional 2-D cel animation, is expected to revive that form in some way. He may even jump-start the long-dormant world-music spin-off of Fantasia, titled Musicana.

WOW
I hope I live to see this.
A much better format to bring Eisner’s style to life.
Every live attempts fail because, either the director or producer don’t get what the core appeal of the strip was;graphics ,story &style.

I don’t know which is better news - Bird interested in doing The Spirit or a revival of 2-D cel animation. Both, to me, are very good news. I like CGI, but I think that there are still certain things ink and paint does better and I think both can happily coexist.

Can anyone recommend *the best* Spirit graphic novel/TPB? I’ve never read any and I’ve always wanted to.

This is the coolest rumor I’ve read in a while. We know Bird is a fan of the Spirit, hence the cameo of a Spirit comic in “The Iron Giant.”
