In all of Los Angeles, there is onnly one radio station that’s truly worth listening to – Indy 103.1. One of the things I like about the station is that it truly is an independent music station, with much of the programming actually centering around the indie scene. One of the best shows they have is Barely Legal (caution – website plays music on loading), a talk show hosted by entertainment lawyer, Joe Escalante, who provides basic legal advice to struggling artists.
On today’s show, Joe provided advice to an internet cartoonist on trademarking his characters, a band on the legalities surrounding videos of their performances and an actor trying to get the SAG card promised him over a decade ago. The most interesting story was from a musician who claims that ‘Queer As Folk’ used a song of hers on TV, even though she only ever signed a deal to include it on a soundtrack CD. Not sure what’s going to happen with that one, but it could be a big deal if it turns out that the production company has done this to more than just the one artist, especially with all the DVDs that have been sold over the years.
If you want to listen to the show yourself, it’s available in podcast form on Apple’s iTunes store.

While this is a bit off topic, I thought I’d mention it anyway. There is no doubt that Indy is one of the best stations in LA, but I feel KCRW (89.9 FM) is also very worth listening to. Maybe Indy’s the best commercial radio station in LA (KROQ being second), with KCRW being the best truly independent station in LA.
As for the show, sounds like it’s definitely worth a listen. Going to have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up!
Yeah, I don’t know why 89.9 fails to appeal to me, but every time I try listening to it, I find myself shooting past it right quick. I just find that I really like the music mix on 103.1 – it’s like my iPod over the airwaves, plus stuff I don’t own yet.
