Next Gen DVD Format War Heats Up

Superb article in the NY Times this morning on the current state of Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD:
At first glance, Amir Majidimehr does not look like a game-changer in the battle to develop the next generation of DVD players and discs. As the vice president for Windows digital media at Microsoft, he neither steers a Hollywood studio nor controls one of the many consumer electronics giants that are betting billions of dollars on one of the two new formats that promise to play high-definition movies and television shows.
Yet when he and his team in Redmond, Wash., decided last September to abandon their neutral stance and to support Toshiba and its HD-DVD standard over the Blu-ray format led by Sony, the unexpected change of heart reverberated through the technology industry.
Looks like HD-DVD is nosing ahead as they get towards the finish line. More here.

That’s a real shame. On paper, Blu-ray beats HD-DVD’s ass like Galactus vs. Jimmy Olson.
Fuck beans.

Yeah man, it’s very much like VHS v. Beta Round Two. Cheaper, less complicated format always wins.

Even though the other format is in all ways superior.
The main reason VHS beat Beta was because Sony was fighting the legal battles against the dumb ass movie companies and spent all their time and cash on the battle but lost the war.

If HD-DVD wins, that’s bad news for Sony on another front. Blu-Ray is the disc format for PlayStation 3 — if HD-DVD becomes the standard, that’s going to be an expensive, dead technology Sony’s going to be paying for in their new game machine. Meanwhile MS have been talking about updating the 360 with an HD-DVD drive…

HD-DVD is bad news for veryone. We would get a better product from blu-ray.

Yeah, Sony can’t have Blu-Ray in the PS3. They’d have to use whatever technology is going to be the popular standard, which unfortunately is looking like HD-DVD.
The good thing kind of is I’m guessing this will all get sorted out pretty soon. It sounds like Sony needs to make a decision in order for the PS3 to go forward.
