RIP Speakeasy ComicsWell, it appears that some things never change - death, taxes, and the shutdown of a comic book publisher. Newsarama reported yesterday that effective Monday at 3:30 PM, Speakeasy Comics would close its doors; never to be reopened again. This news was not a complete shock since there were rumblings about this move since the middle of last year.

But it is still sad to hear. Personally, I was buying at least two books (Rocketo - which has been moved to Image and Athena Voltaire) with one scheduled to ship next month (The Black Coat). Of course, reactions from the masses have been either glad that they stopped buying the company’s books or that they didn’t market themselves properly. Ehh, you get the picture.

So, lump in Speakeasy with the likes of Valiant, Dreamweave, Caliber, Awesome, and CrossGen in the big list of comic book companies that failed to remain afloat in the comic book creating business. However, if the current comic book market continues the way that it currently is with big-budget crossovers and interconnected titles, there will be more comic book companies getting the toe-tag.
