“Battlestar Galactica” Leaving Sci Fi Channel?

It may very well be the case, with rumors beginning to circulate that when BG returns this October, the new episodes will be airing on NBC rather than the Sci Fi Channel. Personally, I’d love to see the show switch to the bigger network if only for the ability to watch new episodes in that sweet, sweet hi def. However, there’s a fear among fans that the ratings, strong as they are for a cable network, may not be enough to satisfy the expectations of NBC bigwigs. Of course if that turns out to be the case, I imagine they’d simply shunt the show back to Sc Fi rather than cancel it, but the ways of Hollywood can be anything but logical so the concern may be legit.
NBC has already tried to rebroadcast specific episodes, including an abbreviated version of the pilot, of the show to expectedly low-ratings results. Of course, those were expected because the episodes already aired. But given the mainstream critical acclaim of the series, as well as its tremendous popularity in iTunes downloads (as well as continued illegal downloads), there is some chatter that NBC Universal — which owns both SciFi Channel and NBC — could be considering moving the series to NBC.
This is a rumor that has been bantied about in the past, but NBC has been suffering in the ratings over the last couple of seasons. And without any other breakout hits, now could be the best time to move what is already considered a money-making commodity.
Ratings for the show have dropped off, but no more than the rest of the Friday lineup, remaining the network’s highest-rated show. In fact, more people tune in to SciFi Channel to watch “Galactica” than who tuned in for its lead-in. In normal cases, networks expect some audience drop off from lead-in to lead-out shows.

If there’s any elaborate, impossible justice in this world, Time Warner will buy the show and put it on HBO.
