Most of you may know, I desperately want to see Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years to come out on DVD. However, I think that I have found something that might be more of a panacea for that need until DoWCPII:TMY (yeah, that’s a messy acronym) finally reaches my greedy fingers. METAL: A Headbanger’s Journey is a documentary that takes a look at what Metal is supposed to be in the new millennium. It was originally a film that made it around the usual film festival circuit and is scheduled for release on May 23rd of this year. Here’s some of the bonus features that’s expected to be in the two-disc set:
- 16 extended interviews with metal rock icons
- 20-minute mini-documentary on Norwegian black metal
- Footage with Lemmy from MOTÖRHEAD at the Rainbow
- Director’s commentary
- Travel outtakes
- An interactive metal history family tree, created specifically for the DVD

The rights for those Decline of Western Civ docs must be pretty screwed up. I can’t think of any other reason why they haven’t been released on DVD yet. And they’re both so amazing, too…
ODIN!!

Actually there are three. But you’re right; there must be something hung up on the rights. Although there are great sources of info about them - a website for the series (http://www.declineyears) & an article about Spheeris in the Wash Post from last year (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/16/AR2005061601651.html)

Yeah, I never got around to seeing that third one. About gutter punks, right? I heard it wasn’t so good…?

Yeah, I heard that one too. Punks from the late 70s-early 80s were cool and stood for something. I think that Gutter Punks are just kids who can’t think of anything else better to do other than trying to live as close to squalor as possible.
Living a life that is basically a homeless person existance doesn’t seem like punk to me. Then again, I must be thinking like the establishment in my old age.
