I was looking for the press release for this yesterday because it sounded intriguing - Time Warner in talks with the major networks to offer their shows through their OnDemand service. While awesome in theory, it’s most likely going to be all fucked up by the companies’ greed. Instead of it being a free service and increasing the potential audience of various TV shows, the service is going to be limited to the top 20 rated shows each week, and cost viewers an additional $10 a month. Not exactly the smartest way to increase viewership, but then, what have you come to expect from entertainment execs.
These top-rated shows would be available on the proposed Hits channel immediately after their first broadcast or the day after, he said. He declined to confirm a report in the New York Times that said the monthly subscription fee for access to 20 top-ranked programs would be around $10.
“It’s just another outlet for customers to do time-shifting,” Harrad said. “It wouldn’t necessarily substitute for and could complement DVRs (digital video recorders).”
