Business Article Discusses Comic Book Sales Increases

An interesting, if only partially informed, article from the Southland paper in Illinois talking about how comic book sales have been on the rise over the last few years. It’s nice to see positive, even enthusiatic press like this from non-hobby news sources, but it’s equally annoying to know that they’re only presenting part of the story. It wouldn;t take too much research to find out that while sales numbers are on the rise, it’s mainly been in the top 20 titles or so, with many indies and lesser Big Two titles seeing their sales cannibalized to support the top books’ sales increases.
Sony Corp.’s “Spider-Man” movie hit theaters in the summer of 2002. In the six months leading up to the release, comic book sales outpaced those of the previous quarter for the first time in seven years.
Furthermore, it appears the comic book industry has been able to build on the gains achieved with the first “Spider-Man” movie and the parade of comic book-inspired films since.
