San Bernardino Library Pulls Manga

Because everyone knows that comic books and manga are strictly for kids, a California library has pulled from the adult section of it’s collection a book titled “Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics” due to some sex scenes. If the book had been placed in the childrens’ section, I might understand their decision to pull it completely from the shelves, but since it’s been racked in with adult titles for the last year and a half, I really don’t get canning it completely. Are library computer systems really so archaic that they can’t just attach a flag of some sort to the UPC code so that it pops up when an 8 year old tries to check the book out?
The book had been in the library system for 18 months, filed in the adult section with other comics-related books, Kieczykowski said. However, the library does not restrict children’s access to the adult sections, leaving it to parents to monitor their children’s reading material.
Kieczykowski said the library usually relies on library journals and what other libraries stock in ordering new books. Although the book was not stocked in most California libraries, Japanese manga and anime are increasingly in demand at the library, he said.
“It’s probably one of the most popular subjects we have these days,” he said.
