When an article about the summer movie season focuses on Tom Cruise’s public bout with insanity last year and that his new baby might be the key to resurrecting his film star status while saving the movie industry from extinction, then you just know that folks are way too into celebrities’ personal lives. Frankly, as long as Cruise doesn’t sacrifice puppies, kittens and conjoined twin preemies in the name of Cthululein Cthulhubbard, I could care less what craziness he gets into privately. Hell, when convicted child molesters are given contracts to direct major films, I fail to see how Cruise’s refusal to come out of the closet should hurt his career in any way, shape or form.

But Cruise comes to box offices with baggage: jumping on talk show couches, screaming of his love for actress Katie Holmes and debating prescription drug use on morning TV.

In fact, a poll this week by online ticket service Fandango named Johnny Depp, who stars in “Pirates,” as Hollywood’s most bankable star. Cruise was far behind at No. 6.

Hollywood is hoping that his tarnished star regained gleam with the recent birth of his and Holmes’ daughter. Moreover, box office watchers point out that in the middle of his antics last summer, Cruise’s “War of the Worlds” earned $591 million globally and was his biggest hit yet.
