Nintendo has finally announced the official name of their next-gen system, and well, it’s a grower. Replacing the very popular “Revolution” placeholder, the official name is now “Wii” (pronounced “we”), and note that this is the first Nintendo system to completely drop the Nintendo moniker. It’s just Wii. It seems like the Internet has exploded with some very negative reactions to the name change. See below for official press release and logo.

Official Wii Press Release
Introducing … Wii.
As in “we.”
While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it’s really not about you or me.
It’s about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

Ha ha! I don’t think it’s so bad. Sounds like something from Ikea, though.

At least Nintendo, as usual, gives us something to talk about. I thought “Revolution” was a great name, and much more powerful than “Wii”, but from a marketing standpoint, “Wii” will get people curious and talking cause it’s so fucking weird. Could become a very hip name like “iPod”…

It’ll be BETTER than “iPod.” “Wii,” after all, has TWO lower-case “i”s in its name! ;-)
The name doesn’t bother me anymore. I still think “Revolution” is better, but I see the marketing reasons for “Wii” and can appreciate them. In the end, it doesn’t matter. It’s the gameplay that does. I can’t wait. E3 is only a week away. (I wish I were going, for the first time in my life.)

I don’t buy electronics based on the name. That’s a sucker’s bet.
