Remember when this movie tanked at the box office (at the time, 50 million was an embarassment to Disney) and Disney yanked all the merchandise off store shelves so fast it made your head spin? Well, the once-failed, now-juggernaut that is Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” is going to be re-released again this Halloween, but this time it’s receiving the full 3D treatment. After last year’s 3D release of “Chicken Little” did so well, Disney started casting about to see what else they should milk for more cash, and NBX was the big gun they decided to draw. Personally, I think that a 3D version of “Pirates of the Caribbean” would have made sense what with the sequel dropping this summer, but I can totally see the wife and I making a date with Skellington and crew this winter.

Burton and “Nightmare” director Henry Selick are involved in the digital remastering of the stop-mo feature starring Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, and were “very cheered by the news” that Disney wanted to release the movie in 3-D, according to Selick.

“When visitors came to visit the set of ‘Nightmare Before Christmas,’ they were always amazed by the intricate sets and beautiful puppets — that they actually existed in miniature,” Selick said Monday. “It was disappointing to see this effect lost on film. By remastering for 3-D, I hope that some of this magic can be captured and shown to the audience in a way they’ve never seen before.”
