Wii = Under $200 Says Sega VP

Holy the crap, if this is true, then Nintendo will rule the holiday season. Full story at Forbes.com.
Bet on the Wii will selling for less than $200, says Scott Steinberg, vice president of marketing for Sega (other-otc: SEGNF.PK - news - people ), one of the major game publishers for Nintendo consoles. Prices for both the Microsoft and Sony machines are higher due to their heavy-duty processing power, and the PS3 will also feature Sony’s next generation Blu-Ray DVD drive.
Because the Wii’s hardware is relatively simple compared to its brawnier rivals, Nintendo should be able to crank out machines faster than Microsoft and Sony, Steinberg predicts. Last fall Microsoft struggled with supply issues for the Xbox and couldn’t keep up with demand; it has since sold 5 million units and says it will have moved 10 million units by the time Sony launches in November. On Monday, Sony said it would have two million PS3s on stores at first, and six million by the first quarter of 2007.

If this turns out to be true, Sony’s in a lot of trouble. They’re banking on their name recognition, but $599? Way too expensive, and if history has shown us anything, best graphics HAS NEVER equaled biggest seller. Cases in point: NES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, and PlayStation2 were all less powerful than their competitors, were competitively priced.
PS3 reminds me of something called the 3DO…and we know how that turned out.

PS3 does NOT = 3DO, dude. Good point about the graphics and sales, though.

Obviously PS3 does not = 3DO (PS3 already has a somewhat solid lineup), but all I said was that the PS3’s situation REMINDS me of the 3DO. It’s super expensive and is trying to be an all-one-device, when the market really isn’t demanding such a thing. All the PS3 needed was to be $299 and have great graphics. It didn’t need to be mind blowingly powerful, and it really didn’t need Blu-Ray, whose inclusion, I think, is going to be a costly mistake for Sony.

True…it’s not sounding like Sony’s making good calls. There’s got to be one loser in every console generation — maybe this time it’ll be the 3DOJaguarDreamcastTurboGraphixVectrexCD-iPS3.

I’m buying the Wii at this point no matter the price point. But at $200, I’ll just buy a couple extra games to go along with it. I haven’t been this excited for a video game console ever.
Now, I just need to convince myself that I don’t NEED the DS Lite in the meantime.

Same here — I haven’t been this excited since the N64. It’s kind of amazing that Nintendo has seemingly changed their image, their focus and outlook. My guess is it’s the new CEO, Iawata. He was a game designer himself.
