“LOST” Action Figures

Even though you know they aren’t going to be very posable, McFarlane Toys’ upcoming “LOST” figures are going to sell like mad. Especially coming off a season finale like last night’s - man, talk about leaving viewers with a freaking cliffhanger that, as the cliché goes, is bound to leave them talking for months to come! Either way, with figures that look as nice as this, a fanbase that’s becoming more and more rabid for quality tie-in crapola, plus an article in USA Today, Todd’s got himself another licensing goldmine, methinks.
“Ideally, we want to have multiple series,” McFarlane says. “But you want to get out of the gate strong. You’ve got to have the top two — Kate and Jack — but then I don’t want to burn off all the top people. I’ll probably do Sawyer with his shirt off for Series 2.”
Some cast members were more excited about the prospect of becoming toys than others. “You have those that get it and those that don’t,” says McFarlane, who spent an hour with each actor. “Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin), Dominic Monaghan (Charlie) and Michelle Rodriguez (Ana Lucia) were real geeks who got it.”
The one who didn’t get it: Terry O’Quinn (Locke).
“He has that kind of anti-commercial thing,” McFarlane says.

McFarlane Toys kinda sucks, IMO. The sculpting is beautiful, but their product are all really just mini statues.

Dan,
That’s what makes them so good. As much as I hold fond memories of the kenner toys of our youth, they were pretty shitty.
Macfarlane’s toys, no matter what you think of him, are great.

They definitely raised the bar as far as sculpting goes — and reshaped the industry by doing so. But man, compare the McFarlane stuff to Marvel Legends. Marvel Legends really has the best of both worlds — amazing articulation with great sculpts. To me, they’re the best, which is why it really sucks that they’re losing the Marvel license this year.

Aw, no, man. The Marvel Legends stuff looks nice at a glance, but doesn’t hold up at all when you really look at it. And I have quite a few McFarlane figures that have the mad articulation. It all varies from line to line, and figure to figure.

I disagree — Marvel Legends are some of the best looking figures on the market. See brown Wolverine, the Thing, the Hulk, and Deadpool, to name a few. Do they look as good as McFarlane’s stuff? No, probably not, but the articulation factor isn’t even comprable, which is a cooler aspect, IMO.

Essentially, this boils down to the fact that you are not the target audience for this line of figures. McFarlane has done, and will likely continue to do figures that have massive amounts of articulation, small amounts of it, or virtually none, depending on the project. This one calls more for realistic recreations of the actors and memorable scenes for their characters than it does the ability to have Jack and Sawyer get it on in some chick’s cubicle.

True — but which McFarlane figs have massive articulation? The only ones I’ve seen with marginal articulation are the Metal Gear Solid 2 toys, and some of the Alien/Predator figs.

It’s admittedly not a lot of them, but there have been several lines over the years that have had plenty of movable parts. Some of the KISS figures, the early Spawn lines, etc., had both limited and highly posable figures, as well as a few from the Total Chaos line, back in the day.
