Lipstick Batwoman

While most of the comments I’ve seen about the new Batwoman, be they positive, negative or simply confused, have focused on the fact that she’s gonna be a lesbian, I think people are missing the real allure that the story has with the media. There’s been a minor frenzy about the DC news, not because they’re launching a high profile gay character this year, because that’s been done before. No, they’re interested because it’s a gay Batman character.
Think about it - if the exact same info had been given to the NYT last week, but it was for an all new, all different, all gay Human Bomb, do you think that the NYT would have wasted time writing a full article about it, or that it would have been picked up on by so many other media outlets? There might have been a little mention of it here and there, buried in amongst other random comic book news about Civil War or the like, but it simply wouldn’t have caught anyone’s imagination. Dress it up in a Bat-outfit though, and stand back!
DC knew what they were doing when they developed this character. I’m not saying it was a cold, calculated stunt built simply for the media attention, but there’s no doubt that they knew that by linking their new lesbian superheroine to their biggest franchise character, they were guaranteed at minimum, a week’s worth of attention from the world at large, plus a steady diet of internet buzz from now until well after we see Batwoman in action for the first time in 52. When it comes to internet fandom, it’s kinda hard to dissapoint on the obsessive fan tip, after all. Either way, it’s all gravy to DC, and will likely result in increased sales for 52, for a while at least, plus solid sales when they eventually collect the “Secret Lives Of The Batwoman” into a TPB next year.

Yeah — it’s like I was saying in the other thread, Northstar being gay doesn’t really cut it. It’s like the ancient proverb: if a comic company creates a gay character who no one knows or cares about, does the character exist?

They made a pretty big deal about it when it happened(Northstar). Hell, my momo knew about it, and she can barely pick the Hulk out of a line up.
The problem with Batwoman on woman, is she’s part of a massive movement to diversify for the sake of diversifying. Seems pointless and sensationalistic.
Great for speculators, though. And you know what they say about speculators…

I’m not trying to be a knee jerk liberal or anything, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with diversifying for diversity’s sake. It’s kind of sad that the Justice League has only white team members (not counting Martian Manhunter — he’s green). If DC consciously corrects this (Blue Beetle, Batwoman, and whoever else), I think it’s a good thing.

I notice DC has given itself a little “escape clause” by making the character a new version of Batwoman instead of the more well- known Batgirl- no one can claim they’re “ruining” a beloved character. Personally, I agree that DC needs to update their overwhelmingly white, male, and hetero universe to reflect the modern world better… but I’d bet this character will turn out to be a short-lived gimmick.

Dan I’m just as much of a knee jerk liberal. It just seems pointless and insulting to our intelligence to wipe out perfectly viable charactrs so we can have diversity forced upon us as a marketing gimmick.
No one really wins.

Well, what can you say? We don’t really know that it was a marketing gimmick — I’m sure they knew it would get some notice, and they had the press release ready to go, but then again, Marvel and DC make press releases every time a comic goes into a second printing. It just so happens that the mainstream media has gone apeshit over this, which I think has taken fans by surprise. I’m really loving the new Blue Beetle, which they’ve admitted was part of a conscious decision to diversify. So in the end, if it leads to a richer universe and stories, then it doesn’t really matter what DC’s intentions were.

I’m sorry. I was looking forward to the new Blue Beetle very much. Almost can’t go wrong with Giffen.
Sadly it’s some of the most poorly written TRASH produced by DC in years. It’s AMAZINGLY bad.
Random remedial spanish words every page or so, in the midst of otherwise perfect english? Is it 1974? No one talks like that NO ONE.
I’m serious. No one fucking talks like that. It’s insulting to the reader, and more insulting to spanish speaking people everywhere. Fuck you for insulting my intelligence with this rehashed, poorly packaged crap. Fuck you very much DC.
