So, I check my email this afternoon and find that there’s a review for “Superman Returns” sitting in there from one C.C. Ekeke. He gave KFR permission to post it as long as we give a shoutout to his website, Shatterhouse.com - consider it done!
Full review, after the jump…
So I’m at the 9-5er yesterday when a friend of mine that works for Warner IM’s with an offer I couldn’t refuse. Would I like to see a private screening of “Superman Returns”.
Let’s just say that backflips were involved. So I meet up with my buddy and see the movie. My thoughts?
It was very, very good. Not great, but really good.
Everyone brought their A game in terms of acting. Kevin Spacey was a fusion of all the Luthors played before him, include Michael Rosenbaum from “Smallville”. He was over the top at times, but vengeful and remorseless as well. As for Kate Botsworth, this was easily the role that will make her a serious main event player in Hollywood. I was totally sold on her being Lois Lane. While not as spunky or ballbusting as Margot Kidder or Teri Hatcher, she brought her own take to Lois Lane (whose character is now a mother) and it paid off in spades.
And last but not least, the new guy wearing the red and blue tights. The man who has to fill the big red boots of Superman. Brandon Routh was FANTASTIC as Superman. He seamlessly moved from the bumbling Clark Kent of Metropolis to the god-like Superman. He had this gravitas, this noble presence that was undeniable. The little things he did made him totally believeable. Granted, there were similarities between Routh and Christopher Reeves, but trust me on this, Routh IS this generation’s Superman.
Now the movie was not without flaws, but they were minor compared to the overall movie. Without revealing anything, this movie is not as action-packed as many might think, but every action taken has a purpose which makes it way more meaningful in the end. This as a whole is light-years ahead of X-Men 3 in terms of…well everything. Mark your calendars, folks, because Superman Returns will be remembered as the film that brings the Last Son of Krypton into the 21st century.
