MST3K Returns? Not exactly, but…

The beloved, hilarious Mystery Science Theater 3000 - where comedians Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson riff on bad movies with 2 robot buddies - has been off the air since 1999, but Nelson is soon to return to the land of making-fun-of-bad movies. Legend Films, for whom Nelson (head writer on MST3K for 10 seasons and host for five) has recorded commentary tracks for Plan 9 From Outer Space and other classically horrible movies, has just launched a new site called Mike Nelson’s RiffTrax. The site will feature $1.99 downloadable feature-length commentaries/MST3K-esque riffing by Nelson, where you pay for the download and then play Mike’s commentary track alongside the movie. This is where it gets interesting: actually getting the movie is up to you. The idea is that you pop in the DVD, hit play, and then listen to Mike on your iPod at the same time. A little complicated, but the bright side of this is that because Legend Films doesn’t need the rights to do any of these commentaries (after all, it’s only audio), Mike can riff on anything. Legend Films has said that Nelson will be joined by other riffers in the future, meaning an MST3K reunion is a possibility/probability. The first downloadable commentary: Patrick Swayze’s Roadhouse. It should be amazing.
