Frankly, I’m surprised Dark Horse is taking it on the nose for this considering there are far more blatant examples of swipes coming out virtually every week. But a small independent film company, Pendragon Pictures, is suing the comic book publisher, claiming that Dark Horse’s recently published “War of the Worlds” book owes a number of it’s panels directly to scenes from the movie. After looking through the site, it’s kind of hard to deny that the artist of the comic wasn’t directly influenced by the movie, but it’s also difficult to claim that any direct swiping was done beyond a very few panels. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what happens if this actually makes it to court. I imagine that if Dark Horse is found responsible for any sort of damages, monetary or otherwise (they’re claiming that it’s the writer and/or artist of the adaptation that Pendragon Pictures should be talking with), we’ll be seeing some sort of crackdown on the Greg Lands of the industry who are far more bold and blatant in the use of their “source material.”
