Titles Announced for PS2’s Hugegantical Sega Genesis Collection

As an ex-Genesis addict and utter sucker for old school video games, I’ve been looking forward to this bad boy for a while. Check it out: 1up.com has a superb rundown of ALL the titles that will be featured in the collection.
So, let’s cut to the chase.
First, the good: Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Ecco, Phantasy Star, Vectorman, Shinobi, Alex Kidd, Comix Zone. Also, ZAXXON.
And now, the bad: no Streets of Rage, no Road Rash, no Gunstar Heroes, no Kid Chameleon.
Ok, sure, this anthology was never going to please everybody, but seriously, is anyone going to mind if a Golden Axe 3 here and an Ecco Jr. there were lopped off to free up some room for something else? And let’s be honest, I loved Sword of Vermilion way back when, but were people really clamoring to replay the thing? More importantly, was the Genesis in fact actually superior to Super Nintendo?
Either way, unless the ports of the games get mucked up, this is going to be a helluva good time.
Welcome to your doom:

One of the most debated topics of the last millenium. I’d have to ultimately come down on the side of the Super NES, but it’s very close (Genesis really showed how important a good sports lineup is, something Nintendo still can’t grasp). Still, here’s my evidence:
Super Mario World (best 2-D platformer ever)
Street Fighter II
Star Fox
Donkey Kong Country
Final Fantasy 3
NBA Jam (was better on SNES)
Pilotwings
Super Star Wars Trilogy
Mario Paint
Yoshi’s Island
Super Metroid

Agreed, it is a very close race. I’m not sure if two consoles with such different titles have ever been so closely matched.
In my view, it usually comes down to this: SNES generally had better platformers and RPGS, Genesis was generally better for action and sports games.

Just for fun, this would be on my “Best of Genesis” compilation:
Streets of Rage Trilogy (how are these not on the new disc???)
Sonic Trilogy
Sonic & Knuckles
Virtua Racing
Altered Beast
Eccho
Golden Axe
Joe Montana Football (had 16 teams, no real players, and no real teams, but I played the hell out of it)
Mortal Kombat
Vectorman 1 & 2
NHL 94

I had an SNES and a Genesis.
I played the Genesis a LOT more.

Street Fighter II was it for me. That took over my life for a good 2-3 years.

If you had Road Rash, you would’ve played a lot less SFII.

My friends had it. Never did anything for me.

Huh. Ok, Mario Paint.

Completely different games. I’m not saying Road Rash is bad at all. (And plus, it’s an EA game, so it may have been on SNES as well).

An afternoon of Road Rash, cigars, beer and pot made for the perfect summer day.

Road Rash is an underrated great of video game past.

Street Fighter 2 was on Genesis.
No one is gonna mention Earthworm Jim? Toe Jam and Earl? Mutant League Football?

Street Fighter 2 got to Genesis well after it became THE system seller for SNES. Kinda like how GTA only got on Xbox well after the fact. It’ll be remembered as a PS2 franchise.
