Grant Morrison on Frank Miller’s “Batman vs. Al Qaeda”
Author: Daniel Brooks
August 23rd, 2006
From Newsarama. And it ain’t pretty:
GM: And while we’re on that subject…Batman vs. Al Qaeda! It might as well be Bin Laden vs. King Kong! Or how about the sinister Al Qaeda mastermind up against a hungry Hannibal Lecter! For all the good it’s likely to do. Cheering on a fictional character as he beats up fictionalized terrorists seems like a decadent indulgence when real terrorists are killing real people in the real world. I’d be so much more impressed if Frank Miller gave up all this graphic novel nonsense, joined the Army and, with a howl of undying hate, rushed headlong onto the front lines with the young soldiers who are actually risking life and limb ‘vs’ Al Qaeda.

You know, those old WWII propaganda comics, as beloved as they are by some fans, really are appallingly tasteless.(Not to mention racist as hell). Should we be suprised that Miller wants to do one for the “War On Terror?” If Miller were HALF as good as his rep, he’d be giving us something like Greg Rucka’s QUEEN AND COUNTRY, which does a brilliant job of dissecting the mechanics of the conflict- on BOTH sides.Instead, he’s gonna foist THIS piece of offensive kitsch on us. Man, I’m glad he’s getting into the movies, because he hasn’t done a good comic in years…

c.tower, you bring up some good points man. I would say though, lets wait until we read the thing before completely condemning Miller. Yes, the premise sounds pretty absurd, but maybe there will be something of substance in the book.

Agreed. Miller’s work shows that he’s a highly intelligent guy, but then again, he could be going insane.

Check out the rest of the interview. Morrison goes on to subtley lampoon Miller’s noir narration in DKR. Pretty funny.

That’s awesome. I thought I was the only one who enjoyed those Barr/Davis issues of Detective.

I never read it, but after 9/11, didn’t Captain America fight Al Qaeda or something?

yeah, I think you’re talking about that egregious Captain America relaunch from a few years back. Nice art, though.

Morrison….can’t hold Frank’s jock. Who has more movie deals in the pipeline? Who has sold more books? Who has done more with ORIGINAL characters over the course of their careers….let alone re-defining established icons?
If Morrison put out any propaganda, simply, no one would care.
Nuff said.

Easy there, RSVigi! Miller has done some incredible work, but so has Morrison. Check out Animal Man, Flex Mentallo (thanks to Andrew for alerting me to it), his New X-Men run, the fantastic All-Star Superman, The Invisibles, the list goes on…
P.S. What the hell ever happened to Batman vs. Al Qaeda?

RSVigi, Miller has done some great stuff. In the last 10 years, not so much.
And having stuff in the movie pipeline doesn’t mean dick. Look at the best Picture winners of the last 11 years. 80% of them are TOTAL crap. The other 20 percent are a musical and a movie about hobbits.
