If you’ve ever needed to know exactly when Superman met up with Atari Force and google’s failed you at every turn, you’re probably going to be interested in the newly launched Superman Database. It’s not an open encyclopedia about the man of steel, rather it appears to be one man’s obsession with the American icon. From the press release:
On August 14th, 2006 I began a website that will eventually include every comic to ever contain a Superman appearance. The reason I began this task was simple. I couldn’t find everything I needed about Superman all on one site. I had to jump from site to site to gather all the information I needed about a certain Superman topic. I wanted it all, plots, cover art, news, and a way to keep track of my own personal comic collection. But just creating a database of comic covers wasn’t enough. I wanted to also create an interactive community where the fans can post comments, reviews and trade comics. Registered users can also create, organize and share their own comic lists by simply logging in and selecting the comics they own or want and pressing the “Add” button.
One month into the project I am quickly learning that creating a database for the world’s most popular comic hero, isn’t going to be easy. Currently, in phase one, the database contains over 2100 comics with over 100 issues being added daily. The comics are mostly from the post crisis time frame, 1987 to present, with a few issues from 1938 also included. Phase two of the database will begin mid to late September, 2006 with all issues from 1938 to 1986 being added. I predict the database will be complete by January of 2007.
Once the database is 100% complete I will begin work on additional features of the site including, but not limited to, Television, Films, Multimedia, Character Biographies, Creator Biographies and many other sections to be announced.
Things are looking bright for SupermanDatabase.com and this is only the beginning. Only up and running for a little over 4 weeks, the site is already become a fan favorite and we are well upon our way of becoming an essential site for all Superman fans.
Visit the site often; this is just the opening act…
