Superman Just Might Re-Return

OK, Warner Brothers - you told Singer and Superman fans worldwide that the only way you’d greenlight a sequel to “Superman Returns” is if it crossed the $200,000,000 mark domestically. Well, with a weekend total of $173,300, SR has crossed that line and now has $200,006,305 to it’s name. Now pony up with the official announcement and make some geeks happy, arite?

It’s sad that a movie that grosses $200m is deemed something of a failure.

What did Batman Begins gross? That was considered a success for them I think — but the budget was far less.

I think Batman also made most of the money back rather quickly where as Supes was more of a Tortise than a Hare

I don’t think Batman Begins grossed much north of $200m.

SR - just hit 200 mil on a 204 mil production budget.
BR - hit 205 mil on a 150 mil production budget.

Ach, production budget. Good call. Think Warner doled out more for SR marketing and pub than it did for BB?

I think part of the problem is that all previous work on SR (Kevin Smith’s script, scrapped sets, etc.) were included in that figure.

Is that a problem, though? I think it makes sense to include the previous costs if you’re looking at the big picture. Sure, for it to all fall on Singer’s shoulders isn’t fair in the least, but man, a new Superman movie seemed to be in continuous production/non-production cycles for a good half decade or so. It was all money (often boneheadedly) spent on the same final product is the thing.

Also not includud in that figure: Worldwide gross.

Not pertinent to the discussion, though. WB gave Singer a 200 million dollar domestic goal in order to greenlight the sequel, and now it’s time to see if they follow through with their promise. But yeah - Superman did $390 mil worldwide to Batman’s $372.

I’d be surprised if they made an SR sequel anytime soon since it was so tepidly received, but maybe it’ll find a wider audience on DVD/cable and then they’ll make another. It’s going to be either that or, I’m predicting, “Superman/Batman.” You heard it here first!

At the end of the article, it sounds like my idea may come to fruition. It’s gotta be Braniac or Darksied.

Darkseid would be amazing. I bet it’s that big dude from space who killed him in the comic, though.

Doomsday would be LAME.
I REALLY want it to be Darksied. If I were a betting man (And I am) I’d lay my money on Braniac.

Agreed, Doomsday would be lame. I figure it’s got to be Braniac — he’s like the next level Superman bad guy after Luthor, right? And they’d never do Mxyzptlk. Bizarro or Zod, possibly. I love nerding out about this crap.

Actually, I heard that back in the 1980’s, the first draft of SUPERMAN 3 featured Brainiac, and the first draft of SUPERMAN 4 featured Bizaaro- but in both cases, the producers rejected the characters as too “comic-booky”.( And there HAVE been rumours of Zod’s return in the new one… a bad idea, in my book, as it’ll just reinforce the idea that they’re just remaking the old Chris Reeve stuff again.)

If they can do Doomsday right, a la Grant Morrison’s take, it could be fun to see Superman actually punch something in the new one.

Huh, that totally makes sense for Superman 3 — Braniac probably morphed into that evil computer with the extendo arms during some rewrite.

I’ve been saying for years that Nuclear Man should have been Bizarro. Instantly a better movie.
