300.jpgIt breaks my heart to say that for once, my beloved Onion was dead wrong: Zack Snyder’s 300, a gleefully violent, aesthetically gorgeous, kick-ass adrenaline-fest of a movie, is among the best comic book adaptations ever.

Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel about the 300 Spartan soldiers who took on the gargantuan Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 is a much welcome depiction of a time when men were men, thirsting for battle, and women loved them for it. It revels in its over-the-top testosterone, cheesy narration, gore and slow-mo, but it’s also deliriously fun, exciting and well-made. Gerard Butler as King Leonidas is particularly charismatic, and only the most jaded moviegoer wouldn’t like his pump-up-the boys speeches.

Zack Snyder may have just made the first great movie of 2007. We can safely say that the film adaptation of Watchmen — Snyder’s next project — is in very capable hands.
