Top Cow’s Downloadable Comic Store Launches

Well, Top Cow’s much discussed downloadable comic book store has launched…and they’ve already slit their own throats. Instead of releasing their titles in the very much preferred by comic book fans CBR format, they’ve instead opted for the near universally loathed PDF format. Most likely this has to do with the ability to load the files up with DRM, another surefire way to alienate your fanbase. Tack on a two dollar per issue price for comics that cost less than that when they were first published starting over a decade ago, and only the most hardcore fans will be buying anything at all.
It’s not like they had to use the PDF format either. Another comic book download site, Pullbox, actually offers users a choice between the two formats. And, while there are a few exceptions to the rule, most of the titles are available for 99 cents a pop which is certainly not an insane price to expect folks to pay.
