The mainstreaming of what used to fall under the unwieldy blanket term “indie rock” continues apace. First the Shins and Arcade Fire scored #2 records, then the new Modest Mouse record hit #1, and now Sony announces their Spider-Man 3 Soundtrack will include contributions from Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Walkmen, Wolfmother, Snow Patrol, and other acts that have nothing to do with James Blunt, Daughtry, Three Doors Down or any other generic MOR garbage.
“Peter Parker never seems to get over his introverted lack of confidence, at least in the classic comic books I remember,” Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard.com today (March 29) in the midst of a tornado warning in his Oklahoma City hometown. “I was looking for some excuse to write a fight song, and then this came up. It has the chiming of the bell when they go into the ring. It’s silly, but with the right storyline, it can be a lot of fun.”
I can’t say any of these groups are my Favorite of All Time or whatever, but hey, they’ve all put out stuff worth listening to. Plus there’s no Nickelback to be found, so, high fives all around.
