It’s been over a year since the end of DC’s Infinite Crisis, a series/event that Dan Didio was more than happy to tell anyone who would listen was built to not only address continuity errors riddling the DCU, but to leave the DCU as a whole a less dark and dreary place. For a while, that seemed to be the case, but by the end of DC’s insanely ambitious weekly series, 52, the gore began to hit the fan.
(Wait for the traders be aware – here there be spoilers!)
It’s not the fact that characters and extras are being killed off at an almost record pace. These are superhero comics, and casualties are a given! What’s amazing is the increase in on-panel blood and guts that’s become commonplace in the DCU, surpassing anything I can think of by Marvel, despite Marvel’s reputation as being more “adult” and “realistic.” 52 in particular started ramping things up with the death and mayhem, leading to issue 43 and the death of Osiris at the mouth of his talking alligator friend, Sobek.

As if Osiris being devoured alive wasn’t violent enough, Black Adam really stepped things up a few weeks later in World War II
The Two-Handed Face Rip!
The old Fist Through the Underage Girl’s Gut trick!

Who needs arms?
The fun doesn’t stop here – the rest of the DCU is getting involved, bnoth in regular monthly series like the Green Lantern Corps, as well as one of DC’s big event series, Amazons Attack!.

And these are just a few of the images that jumped out at me and stuck in my head the other day when I was thinking about things. Not exactly looking like a bright and happy place to live, is it? Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m neither offended nor upset by this turn of events. It’s more accurate to say I’m somewhat bemused by the fact that this is Didio’s idea of a brighter universe and was wondering if I’m the only person that’s noticed this turn of events.

Ha ha! Wtf?
Didio is a dildo.
