Movie Review: Transformers

Friend of the site, Paul Lee won a pair of tix to a Transformers advance screening last night in LA. Paul and I have been going back and forth offline over the movie with me finding myself in the odd position of not being a huge TF fanboy, but still getting irked and annoyed at what I see as unneeded changes to the characters and Paul wanting to agree but finding himself drawn more and more into Bay’s vision of the franchise.
At any rate, here’s his quick thoughts on the flick. I think he liked it.
In writing this review, I wanted to say something profound and insightful. This movie defies that. With this movie, what you see is what you get. It delivers everything it promises, giant battling robots in all their CG glory and every last trick out of Michael Bay’s movie making repertoire. The movie is loud, and bombastic, slick and sexy, and ultimately a fun time. Shia LeBeouf turns in a great performance. Female lead, Megan Fox is diabolically, and distractingly beautiful. The rest of the cast is so large, that you never get much character development on them. They all are pretty much one dimensional characters direct form central casting. But who cares? GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOTS!! What else do you need? Optimus Prime’s lips are not creepy or distracting. There was no sign of any version of a remade Transformers theme song, cheesy or not. Every time Optimus Prime appeared on screen, the entire audience broke out into cheers. Movie is full to the brim with Hollywood blockbuster cliches, but cliches done well makes for a rip roaring good time. The long and the short, you get what you expect and it is done well. A truly good time at the movies.

I hope to see this tuesday. But for me. In a movie where I want to see robots SMASH, to much human character developement would annoy me.
