Yeah, it’s been making the rounds for at least a week now, but this piece scanned from a 1947 issue of Life Magazine is too cool not to comment on. Life basically got a handful of the biggest nespaper strip artists to try drawing their creations while blindfolded, with varying results. It’s hard to argue that Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy isn’t the best one, but I find Milt Canniff’s Steve Canyon to be far more interesting. It’s like all the pieces are there, but somehow the registration for the different sections of Steve’s head are off.

I’d love to see the results of a similar experiment with today’s comic strip guys, as well as comic book artists. I’ve a sneaking suspicion more than a few of them would end up having pieces barely distinguishable from their non-blindfolded sketches.
