Looking to turn those mad cartooning skillz into cold, hard yen? This is pretty neat: The Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan’s largest newspapers, is looking for entries for their 29th International Cartoon Contest. Anyone can enter, but entries must be received by 9/21/07. The grand prize is 2 million yen, which is like $15K. Not bad!
This year’s theme for the contest is, oddly enough, “Teeth.” But I’ll let them explain the reasoning behind that particular choice:
The theme for the contest is “Teeth,” with the competition open to people from all backgrounds, ages and levels of experience. The theme may leave many people unsure about what to draw due to the seemingly unusual subject.
Teeth are necessary parts of the body for survival and people’s mouths can convey their feelings as eloquently as their eyes. Eyes also can show lies and pretense, but the mouth is more honest, clearly expressing people’s feelings and thoughts.
Teeth are hard and sharp, and sometimes can work as a weapon. But such strengths can be easily lost without proper care. Perhaps such strength and fragility of teeth can be used as a metaphor for contemporary society. The theme may be a challenging one.
Dear Japanese,
We thank you for always being completely f*&king weird.
Sincerely,
KFR
