SDCC 07 - Time For The Costumes!

As always, the convention floor was littered with costumes galore, some good, some abysmal and some amazing. I’ve stuck with taking pics of the ones that interested me the most, for one reason or another, and I’ve slipped a shot of a celebrity in the mix as well. One thing I noticed - Klingons are out, pirates are in. We walked the floor for two days and didn’t see a single Star Trek themed outfit, which is odd since Klingons have been a costuming mainstay of the show for just about ever. Pirates, on the other hand, were everywhere, often traveling in packs, singing and otherwise putting on performances. And no, I didn’t bother photographing any of them.
But enough of that! Time for photos (with captions!)

The best of the lot, IMO - Adam Strange was chilling on his cel phone (tucked neatly in his mask like some communicator) and chomping on a banana lunch. He was still kind enough to pose for a pic, which is awesome because the costume is the balls.

For the longest time, I kept seeing girls dressed in psuedo-sailor outfits and was confused as to why the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was such a popular costume choice this year. Eventually I realized that they were dressing as various sailorish anime characters. These two were the least Stay-Puft looking I could find.

Just a couple of Aquabats walking by. This isn’t the promised celebrity photo, though. At least, I don’t think so. I’m not sure I’d be able to tell a real Aquabat from a fan in costume if they stood 2 feet away from me.
More, even more awesome costumes after the jump, including Cherry from “Planet Terror”, some robot dude, Power Girl and the world’s tallest Batman!

This guy was part of a trio of badass costumes, along with Spider-Man and Captain America. And seriously, the guy was like 20 feet tall. Or maybe 7 feet. Taaaaall.

The second member of the trio, Captain America was a slightly better cowl away from looking better than the guys who dress up for Marvel on a professional level. Fans were mobbing these guys, and with good reason.

The third amigo, Spidey, had the best fanmade Spider-Man costume I’ve ever seen. In fact, if he wasn’t there alongside the obviously homemade but still amazing Cap and Bats guys, I’d suspect some costuming chicanery, but I’m giving the Greatest Superhero Ever the benefit of the doubt.

Here’s your celebrity appearance - Christian Cage, aka Captain Charisma, aka The Champ! Christian was nice enough to pose for a shot and nicer yet to let a slightly overzealous fanboy show him every single wrestling card he had bought at the show. Christian loves his peeps, and apparently, Spiccoli.

Really cool costume that was, sadly, this was the most interesting (and sexy) Princess Leia I saw the entire time I was there.

Toy manufacturers take note - this isn’t the only Wonder Woman costume I saw a little girl wearing during the show. It’s simply the best. This little one nailed the character, laughing and giggling and enjoying the show, but putting on her amazonian game face when asked to pose for a picture. Awesome.

All right, not a true costume, but I thought my daughter looked pretty cute in her custom made Atom Eve t-shirt. She seemed to enjoy it, too.

The internet meme that just will not die. This PBJ Time banana was having a great time, unlike the poor sap who had to dress up in a much sadder looking banana costume while handing out Jamba Juice samples across the street from the con.

I believe this is the only costume I’m featuring that’s professionally sponsored, but I was impressed with the fact that not only does the costume look great, but the studio people actually hired a smokin’ hot model with 1.5 legs to portray Cherry. Bad. Ass.

Every con, has a few Power Girls walking around. Not every con has good Power Girls walking around. Somewhat surprisingly, she seemed to be attracting more young girls for photos than horny geeks, which was kind of cool, and I’m sure was a nice change of pace for her as well.

I’m a sucker for robot costumes made out of paper maché, and this purple robot dude was pretty cool. I think I’ve seen it in years past, but after a while all these robots start to blur together.

The key to making your Tick costume work if you don’t have a Warburtonesque jaw? Flip-flops.

For some reason, I feel like I should know what these guys are dressed up as, but I’m drawing a total blank. Still, props to having the fortitude to wear a gutted TV on your head for hours on end.

The last costumes I photographed and the last I’m posting. I’m not a Top Cow fan at all, but these were some great outfits worn by fans that could actually pull it off. Always a pleasant way to end the con experience!

Okay, so when I google “Atom Eve costume” and I get a picture of that little girl, it just makes my day - TOO CUTE!!! :-D
I am going to Comicon 2008 as Atom Eve…can you please offer some advice? How did you ‘custom-make’ the Eve insignia? Iron-on? It’s causing me grief!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Dani! The logo is an iron-on I printed out from a copy of the logo I drew in Illustrator.
