Went with The Old Ladyâ„¢ last night to the 92nd St Y to check out a conversation between one of the funniest people in the world, ex-Monty Python and world traveller Michael Palin, and one of the world’s great experts on comedy, Lorne Michaels.
The chat was ostensibly about Palin’s new book, Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Years, but went all over the place: short Python and SNL anecdotes, the nature of comedy, what it’s like to be one part of a successful creative group, writing for the BBC, the bizarre nature of the 70s, that sort of thing.
Both guys were charming and interesting throughout, although you got the inkling the earthy and earnest Palin would probably be happier chatting over greasy food and drink in a bar somewhere. Sure enough, while he was doing his book signing after the conversation with Michaels, he had a pint of beer at his side. Cheers.
