Shrek Needs To Stop

Unfortunately tripped across this bit of news on the NYT site:
“Shrek the Musical,” based on Shrek the Book as well as Shrek the Movie, has announced Shrek the Pre-Broadway Engagement at the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle. The musical, by David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori, will play there from Aug. 14 to Sept. 21 and is scheduled for Broadway in early November. No theater has been announced, but a musical the size of “Shrek” needs a big theater, sort of like those now occupied by “The Color Purple” and “Legally Blonde.” Hmmm.
Please, no.

Geez. Just when you thought both Shrek and Broadway couldn’t stoop any lower. I visited NYC a few months ago and I saw that Legally Blonde was in one of the big theaters in Times Square. WTF? ugh.

Yeah and Legally Blonde is actually fairly successful from my understanding.
The Broadway musical is sadly pretty much a joke at this point — there’s too much money involved, so any artistry or anything challenging or different in the content is watered down in order to play the whole thing safe so it’ll please the most tourists.
However, serious drama seems to be making something of a comeback. Go figure.
