Weird Al to Guest on RiffTrax

While we still miss MST3K, former star and head writer Mike Nelson (along with frequent collaborators Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett) has kept the movie-riffing flame alive for over a year now with the surprisingly successful RiffTrax (which, as a fan, I’ve admittedly posted about before), where you download his commentaries and sync them up with your DVD. It can be very hit (”Roadhouse”) or miss (”X-Men”), but one great innovation RiffTrax has brought to movie mocking is the guest riffer. Thus far, Mike has had riffing help from Fred Willard, Neil Patrick Harris, and Mary Jo Pehl (of MST3K), but I must say I am extremely stoked for his next guest: Weird Al Yankovic. Their flick? Take a look at the preview below to find out. Comes out February 5th.

I gots to say it: Weird Al is MUCH better at this than Mike Nelson (admittedly, I’m more of a “Joel” kind of guy myself…)

Doc, you should check out cinematictitanic.com, Joel’s new riffing venture, if you’re more of a fan of his. Their first disc, “The Oozing Skull,” didn’t knock me out of the park, but it did have some really funny moments at the same time. Plus, it was fucking awesome to hear Joel at it again.
Rumors are he actually tried to get MST3K started again, but Jim Mallon, who owns the rights, stopped him. Mallon, apparently a major douchebag, also stopped Mike, Kevin and Bill from releasing The Film Crew series of DVDs with Rhino, which forced them to move to the Shout Factory and delay the project 2 years.
