Land Puts Liefeld To Shame

So, Wizard World LA took place over the weekend, and among all the X-Men news that came out was this little piece of cover art from Greg Land.

Even at a glance, you can probably see where this is going, what with the character on the far left (Pixie, a young teenage, relatively innocent character) exhibiting Land’s now infamous “O-Face” pose. It gets better though! he good folks at Scans Daily put together an animated gif overlaying some of the other swipes they found from Land’s past work onto this “new” cover art, and I added a couple more to fill in a few more gaps.

I’m certain even more will show up in the next few days, if not hours, making these shirts even more appropriate for the 2008 Con Season than they ever were before.

dude the worst is his drawing of brown wolvie/daken, also revealed at the show. it’s a clear trace of one of the hugh jackman publicity stills for the new Wolvie movie.

What the hell is “daken”? Besides being an anagram for “naked,” I mean.

Yeah, it’s Wolvie’s son, from a completely boring and contrived arc in Wolverine:Origins. Thanks, Daniel Way!

Yes, we all know that Rob Liefeld can’t draw the paper bag that he can’t draw his way out of, unless Arthur Adams drew it first… which resulted in the most retarded of visuals! However, Land’s work, though sadly bereft of any sense of spontaneity, DOES LOOK GREAT! If you think about it, he’s only doing the black & white version of what Alex Ross does, using photo reference. Land obviously has great skills, due to his ability to adapt his swipes to what looks to be attractive finished drawings… again, very much like Alex Ross. With Liefeld, you ended up with shitty retarded looking swipes, because Liefeld simply DOESN’T ACTUALLY DRAW. He never challenged himself with so much as to do any kind of background environment (beyond the paper mache trees and mountains, and the occasional vertically/horizontally straight lines that was supposed to comprise a wall and floor)! So, if you’re going to get pissed at Land for this, then take a closer look at anyone else that uses photo reference (Alex Ross, Neal Adams, many others). You might find that it’s not THAT someone swipes from photos, it’s more HOW they do it…

Oh yeah, another thing: because of what I said above, Land DOES put Liefeld to shame… in a GOOD way.

Except that Land doesn’t just photoreference: he traces. He literally traces photos. On top of that, he tends to use porn for his “reference” material, so you end up with weird O-faces whenever someone is supposed to be yelling or, for that matter, talking. Land can be a good artist when he actually wants to try; he’s just stopped trying, because he doesn’t need to anymore.

BitterCupOJoe,
I can’t argue with you on that one. He is better than that, I have to believe. Not Liefeld, though.

I add to the fact that Land is now notorious for using his old work as tracing material for his new work. Obviously, it becoming more of a game (above image, for example) to figure out what old work he is “recycling” for his latest work.

I kind of love that the guy traces porn. It’s like some kind of demented meta commentary on superhero comics. Also it’s amusingly lazy.

Traces porn and wrestling. Hmm…..
