Del Toro To Move To NZ For Four Years And Direct The Hobbit

This is the big nerd news lately besides Blade going to the hoosegow, so I’m guessing everyone’s seen this is happening, right? What do you think? Could be pretty rad. I’ve yet to not enjoy one of Del Toro’s films, although his narratives can get sort of elusive and clunky. Hopefully he can smooth out his propensity for uneven pacing.

I think it’s a great choice…Pan’s Labyrinth especially showed he has the chops for Fantasy, and I hope he takes the less-CGI-is-more approach to the Hobbit that he did with PL.

Considering that Del Toro had been talking about doing stuff like MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and FRANKENSTEIN, this is a HUGE comedown. (Yeah, I’m the guy who hates Tolkien-sue me. Of course, Del Toro may have decided remaking his favorite 1930’s monster movie was a bad idea after seeing Jackson’s KONG…)

I’m not a big fan of Tolkien, either, but I do like The Hobbit.

Completely agreed though…Mountains of Madness would be awesomely unsane.

Am I the only one who didn’t hate Kong?

Well, the thing about PJ’s KONG is that, while in every SPECIFIC area (script, acting, effects, etc) it’s a more WELL MADE film than the original, it just has no RESONANCE. KONG 33 is an epic myth about a god-like beast-king; PJ’s Kong is the sad story about what happened to a mistreated animal.
