EA’s “Mirror’s Edge” Debuts at PlayStation Day

While there’s been relatively little hype surrounding today’s “PlayStation Day” event in London (honestly, I didn’t even know it was happening until this morning), Sony has shown off some promising material (including Killzone 2 and Resistance 2) and a few surprises.
Most impressive among those surprises is EA’s Mirror’s Edge for PS3. Never heard of it, and I have no clue what it’s about, but it looks pretty amazing:

I’ve read a little about it. The basic concept is that it’s set in the near future and a totalitarian regime controls the world or country, I don’t remember off the top of my head. An Echelon-style AI monitors all electronic communications, and near-universal video surveillance makes normal methods of communication difficult, so the resistance is forced to rely on couriers, which are essentially professional parkour practitioners that take packages across rooftops, down back alleys, etc. where there are few or no cameras; in other words, the more dangerous the route, the less chance of getting caught by the authorities. It’s in the style of a first person shooter, but according to the info released so far, there will be less emphasis on combat, and more on navigation, jumping, etc., with a focus on trying to put the player more “in” the character than current FPS’s do. A good example of this is the wobbliness as the character walks across the pipe in the trailer, and the fact that you see not just the gun she carries, but also her arms and legs.

Oh, one other thing, if it’s a PS3 exclusive, which seems unlikely, given EA/Dice’s involvement, but if it is, and it holds together well, it’ll be the first good reason I’ve seen to buy a PS3. Well, other than the blu-ray drive.

Wow, thanks for the info, BCJ. While I think it looks great, I am curious as to how it controls. I don’t trust EA branded games in the non-sports department much anymore.
As for the PS3, I think it’s starting to hit some kind of a stride, though you’re right, there just aren’t many compelling games for it right now that you can’t get everywhere else. I don’t own one, but I probably will take the dive when God of War 3 comes out.
P.S. Rumor is that Rockstar is going to unveil a PS3 exclusive.

Wow. That looks amazing. I spotted this on the cover of a gaming magazine while waiting for a friend in line at a computer store. It sounded amazing. Seeing the video makes it somehow more amazing looking. Plus I’m really digging the music they used.
