Official KFR Batman Begins Rating

Steve: Batman Begins is a tough movie to grade because it has all the ingredients for a great movie, but shits the bed after the Bruce Wayne training sequences. The nonsensical and physically impossible (by any universe’s established rules) monorail/subway/train sequence alone knocks 10 points off the movie’s score. Add to that the insanely bad water poisoning plot, the fact that Nolan can’t seem to direct a fight scene without turning off all the lights and the ridiculous bit with the Batmobile running along the rooftops of century-old buildings and the horribly ill conceived romantic subplot is almost unforgivable. 65%
Duncan: The first third or so of Batman Begins is great, gritty pulp, and for a good while you’re convinced this is going to be something special. Then, despite a superb cast and Nolan’s cool, stylish approach, it falls prey to an all-too-typical superhero movie problem: it tries to do too much and becomes a clunky, self-indulgent mess. There are some nice moments here and there, and overall I still think it’s worth watching. But that can’t hide the fact that Nolan cannot direct an action sequence to save his life. 77%
- Pros:
- Genuinely enjoyed seeing it in the theater.
- The young Bruce Wayne sequences were genuinely entertaining and well done.
- Cillian Murphy’s Dr. Crane/Scarecrow was fantastic. Too bad the character was basically a non-starter of a villain.
- Cons:
- We’re not sure WTF we were smoking/drinking while watching it in the theater.
- Why does everyone in Hollywood insist on muddying Batman movies up with horrible romantic sub-plots?
- Nolan’s “action” sequences are dull and lifeless - at least, we think they are. When you shoot them in the dark, it’s kind of hard to tell.
- The poisoned water supply and climactic train sequences were worthy of the Adam West version of the character.

Man, you guys are WAAAY off here.
Have either of you ever been in a fight before?

Regarding the fight scenes, I thought they were all filmed too close in. It works in the scene where Batman is taking on the goons at the shipyard because we haven’t see him yet, so it gives you a taste of the goons’ point of view that they are all flipped out and don’t know what’s going on. But after he grabs Falcone the fight scenes after that should’ve included shots that were zoomed out a little more instead of sticking with staying so close in as you can’t tell what’s going on aside from Batman tussling around with some nefarious types.

TUnit: The answer is yes, but what does that have to do with anything?

Dunc: Then you should understand what he was going for, successfully IMO, with the frenetic direction of the action sequences.

I always got the feeling Nolan and company just weren’t comfortable with all the “superhero” stuff, and would rather be doing straight up crime thriller.(Looks like DARK NIGHT will be more of the same). As for the obligatory romance ( “Look, Batman isn’t gay, honest!”), I can’t believe they used Rhas Al Ghul and left Talia out (surely they MUST have realised she had much more story potential…)

TUnit — I totally see what Nolan was going for, but I just don’t think he’s very good at it. Action scenes just aren’t one of his strengths, I don’t think. But hey, maybe he’ll improve in this new one.

My question to you both is - what would your original scores for the movie be when it was released? Have the scores been adjusted due to the time between today and 2005?

Day of release, probably a 90. A month later, 80-85. Seeing it on cable the first time - 50. Cable again, current rating of 65.

Well, it’s no Veronica Mars…

I still love Batman Begins…one of the few superhero flicks that I find myself able to watch again and again, and want to watch multiple times. It’s not without its problems though… I do think that Nolan pulled off what he was going for with the fights, but it still would’ve been nice to see Bats vs. Ras in a clearly visible, well-choreographed fight. And I always thought that Gordon driving the Batmobile at the end was jarringly cartoony for a film that was doing such a good job at making everything seem real. But that’s just nitpicking. Overall, I still enjoy it.

Agreed with comment #8.
A pure Batman-nerd I gave it 95+ at the theatre then it dropped when I thought about the lame train sequence - your comments have brought it down more.
Although all this brought to light after my new #1: Iron Man which is basically the opposite of Batman Begins.
No one can beat this summer’s #1 best movie effect: Robert Downey Jr.
Expectations are very low for me for the Dark Knight from that new trailer - only that shot of Two-Face’s scarred face can bring it back…still not happy with the Joker.
