Indiana Jones: Suckfest Or Spectacular?

CNN’s entertainment desk asks a question that’s sure to get the nerd juices flowing - is all the secretiveness about the upcoming Indiana Jones flick there because it kinda sucks? I have to admit, I’ve been wondering about that myself since seeing the trailer in front of Iron Man. There was something about it that seemed kind of off to me, and watching it again last week on the computer, I figured it out - the trailer feels like it was edited by Lucas, or whoever edited the Prequel trailers. All the information is there, but it’s strung together in a nonsensical, poorly cut fashion, hitting all the notes visually, but with no genuine emotion. Really makes me wonder if Lucas had a heavy enough hand in production of the film to outweigh Spielberg’s influences. Reading this bit in the CNN piece doesn’t do much to convince me otherwise.
In its earliest incarnation, Lucas proposed an all-out alien flick called “Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men From Mars.” Spielberg and Ford didn’t like that idea, and it took more than a decade of wrangling to come up with a story all three could live with.
A trailer showing a crate marked “Roswell, New Mexico, 1947″ — a mecca for UFO buffs — hints that the movie retains traces of its extraterrestrial origins. Remarks by Lucas that the new film took its cue from 1950s sci-fi tales backs up that notion.
“The B-movies of the ’50s were crazy science-fiction films, ‘It Came From Outer Space’ and ‘Them!’ and I said, ‘Well, gee, I could use that as the basis of the genre that I was using as my reference,’ ” Lucas said.

Since I saw the first trailer, I’ve been worried this is going to be a bigger suckfest than any of the SW prequels.

Totally worried about this too…I think Spielberg is still an amazing filmmaker, but Lucas has seemingly lost his marbles.

And, more than that, too many cooks can turn soup into poop.

The early reviews have started to come in, and while not all of them are raves, on the whole it’s getting a Thumbs Up. More importantly, the concensus is that it really is a “proper” Indy film- it has a tone and style consistent with it’s predecessors.Lucas has always been the “creator” of Indy, but Spielberg is the guy who made the films fun to watch, and he’s reportedly on his game this time out…

My expectations aren’t that high, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy myself.
